"Before he was a department store magnate, John Wanamaker was a Sunday school teacher. And the Bethany Collegiate Presbyterian Church in Havertown traces its roots to the Bethany Sunday School that Wanamaker founded in Philadelphia in 1858. In October of that year, construction began on Bethany Presbyterian Church at 22d and Bainbridge Streets. By the early 1900s, two Philadelphia churches - John Chambers Memorial Church and Bethany Temple - had joined Bethany Presbyterian to form a ''collegiate session" of churches."
